Advent has long been part of the church’s annual calendar. Rather than commemorating a single day as ‘Christmas’, the season of Advent encourages contemplation of Jesus’ Incarnation over several weeks. In this way, followers of Jesus can slow the pace as they consider events leading up to, and then following, that night in Bethlehem. And, by giving attention to Jesus’ first advent, people can also ponder the promised second coming of Jesus, and what that will mean for all who love the Lord.
This year, Advent begins Sunday, November 27. From that day until December 25, we can read texts, sing carols and enter into a variety of activities that focus our hearts and minds on God’s good gift. This Advent Guide aims to help with all of that. More than a dozen writers and artists, bringing with them a wide range of experience and insight, have contributed to making this book happen. Our hope is that the Guide will serve as a companion during the weeks of Advent, encouraging readers to enter and enjoy the season in fresh ways.
